There aren't, it has to be said, all that many downsides to earning a living from photography, but I do sometimes wish that I had more time to take pictures just for the sake of it. So when I had a few hours to spare in New York last weekend, I set myself a mini assignment: to do a mini photo essay on the city's ubiquitous yellow cabs in motion.
I've probably watched too many film portrayals of NYC over the years, but there's something about those great slabs of beaten-up yellow Detroit-mobiles that sums up the place for me. Taking pictures of them moving added to the interest and gave me the opportunity to experiment with slabs of colour and tone, and using my Olympus C-8080 - the only camera I'd brought with me - meant I could easily blend in with the tourist crowd.
And you know what? It was fun! With no client to please, no deadline to meet and a camera that doesn't respond well to hurried handling, I rediscovered for a few hours the simple joy of taking photos...
